Metaphysical Qualities
In metaphysical belief systems, tourmaline is considered a powerful and protective stone. It's often associated with grounding and protection against negative energy. It's believed to create a shield around the user, helping to transform dense, negative vibrations into lighter, positive ones. Different colors of tourmaline are thought to have specific properties:
-
Black Tourmaline: The most well-known protective stone, believed to absorb and repel negative energy, promoting a sense of security and stability.
-
Pink Tourmaline: Associated with love and emotional healing, encouraging self-love, compassion, and emotional balance.
-
Green Tourmaline: Considered a stone of vitality and growth, believed to bring healing energy to the heart and boost physical strength and stamina.
-
Watermelon Tourmaline: A unique variety with a pink center and a green outer layer, thought to harmonise the heart chakra, fostering peace and joy.

Different Colors of Tourmaline
Tourmaline is a mineral group, not a single mineral, and its wide range of colors is a result of its varied chemical composition. Different trace elements within the crystal structure are responsible for the various hues.
The most common colors include:
-
Black (Schorl)
-
Green (Verdelite)
-
Blue (Indicolite)
-
Pink
-
Red (Rubellite)
-
Yellow
-
Brown (Dravite)
-
Colorless (Achroite)
Scientific Value
-
Piezoelectricity: Tourmaline is a piezoelectric material, meaning it generates an electrical charge when subjected to mechanical stress, such as pressure or vibration. This property makes it useful in pressure sensors and other electronic devices.
-
Pyroelectricity: Tourmaline is also pyroelectric, meaning it generates a temporary electrical charge when heated or cooled.
-
Negative Ion Generation: When heated, tourmaline is known to generate negative ions. While the health benefits of negative ions are a subject of ongoing research, some studies suggest they may have a positive effect on air quality and stress levels.
-
Far-Infrared Radiation (FIR): Some research suggests that tourmaline may emit far-infrared radiation when heated, which can increase blood flow and improve microcirculation. A study on mineral-infused clothing containing tourmaline powder found an increase in heart rate variability, which is linked to relaxation and reduced stress (Huo et al., 2024).
